Vox blogs – choosing privacy and public

“Blogs von Vox sind nicht für jedermann” – Helmut Spudich writes about the weblog software vox in last Saturday’s Standard edition.
Vox is a free blogging tool by Six apart (movable Type) which integrates foto, video and audio. “It differs from other weblog tools in the possibility to choose who may watch entries or pictures. The feature allows for every entry to select whether it is intended for “the world”, “friends&family”, “friends” or “family”.” (free translation to english).

After reading the article, I made a quick tour through the web to find more about the subject. And the blogosphere is discussing! The networking possibilities and beginner-friendly characteristics of the tool losens up the border between weblogs and social networking tools. This is acknowledged by some people (new generation of MySpace with simple interface) and critisised by others (target group moves from professional to semi-professional users).
I see myself more in the first group. Weblog software interfaces are still more or less user unfriendly, and every development can just help to advance them. The meshing of different functionalities, intoducing multimedial possibilities in the – so far – mainly text based domain of weblogs, opens new possibilities. Is privacy management against weblog philosophy? In my opinion it depends on the setting. Defining a neighbourhood of readers for some specific entries does still allow for dicsussion resp. trackback. To serve the whole blogosphere, entries can be published without constraints as well. If the activities of a blogger shift more and more to working online, this process might be supported by having the possibility to protect some data.

A good and detailed description with screenshots about vox functionalities is given on the blog in a minute ago by Sharon Boggon.

There’s not just vox… Marshall Kirkpatrick compares the privacy centric multimedia social networking service multiply with vox:
“If you are looking to share text, photos and video with some control over who can see your content – these are two services you should check out.”
His conclusion after comparing various aspects of the tools:
“If you’re looking for beautiful templates to chose between, a young hip crowd to network with and a company most likely to support emerging technology trends requested by early-adopter type users then Vox is the way to go. If you seek logical and robust privacy controls and shelter from an online world of strangers then Multiply is better designed. I prefer Multiply’s handling of media items and news feeds from your network of contacts. Vox is beautiful, Multiply is more functional.”
